Papago Park (Arizona) USA POW Camp
Papago Park was located in Eastern Phoenix Arizona. The camp opened in June 1943 and closed March 1946 housing 1788 German POWs. A famous aspect of the camp was an escape tunnel that was dug by the POWs and used by 25 prisoners to escape on December 23, 1944. All of the POWs were eventually captured with two actually making it to Mexico. They were about to be shot as spies when rescued by American authorities. Chits were issued in 1, 2, 5, 10, and 25 cent denominations. Papago Park has an excellent museum with information about the camp.
